The Effect of Christianity in Society

By Pastor J.D. Link

Deut. 4:5-9 says, “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons.”

Although in context these verses are referring to Israel, there is an application to our own nation, which was founded by people of God (Christian pilgrims), looking to establish a Christian society. That is our heritage. Our president has stated that the U.S. is not a Christian nation. Well, if he means that the majority of people that live in the U.S. are not true Bible believing, born again Christians – then he is right. We are now in the minority, although some 70+% of Americans claim to be “Christian”. However, if he means that we are not fundamentally and historically a Christian nation, then he is absolutely wrong.

Our roots are unmistakably Judeo-Christian. To read the true history of Plymouth, the Declaration of Independence and the writings of our Founding Fathers; you would have to be willfully ignorant to not see their acknowledgement, their faith, and their obedience to God and their respect and admiration for the Holy Bible. Just look at some of these quotes:

“I have examined all religions, …and the Bible is the best book in the world” – John Adams. “My hopes of a future life are all founded upon the Gospel of Christ” – John Quincy Adams. “I would make it (the Bible), in short, the Alpha and Omega of knowledge” – Elias Boudinot. “..the system of morals and His (Jesus) religion … (is) the best the world ever saw, or is likely to see” – Ben Franklin. “The Bible is a book worth more than all the books that were ever printed” – Patrick Henry. “The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the Word of God, and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next” – John Jay. “…to the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian” – George Washington. “The Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children under a free government ought to be instructed” – Noah Webster. We are indeed a Christian nation; but our foundations are being destroyed (Ps 11:3).

Now, Marxist/Socialist/Communist/Secular Humanist are running our country; and it shows. Now, if you hold the views of our Founding Fathers, you are considered a “hater”, and you are torn to shreds by a left-wing Marxist. However, if you are for “gay” marriage, abortion, throwing out the Constitution, eliminating the Bible, crosses, prayer, and anything remotely Christian from society; gun confiscation, global warming, transgender bathrooms, etc. – then you are “enlightened” and “progressive”. Our Founding Fathers are no doubt rolling over in their graves.

What makes a nation great? What makes a nation blessed? Psa 33:12 “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”

Pro 14:34 “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Pro 11:11 “By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.” Pro 29:8 “Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. And who are the wise men? Pro 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

If the foundations are destroyed, and The Bible, Christianity, & Jesus Christ are removed from our society, this country will quickly become an epic failure – and the American experiment will be over. We are on the brink of this now, but I believe there is still hope for recovery.

The great revivals in our nation’s history have always come at a time of extreme darkness. We are ripe for another – but it starts with the house of God.  Spiritual awakening in society will only come with spiritual renewal in the Church.  When Christians get serious about Jesus and set on fire from Heaven, true change will come.  Until then, nothing will change the course we are on.  Jesus said Believers are the salt of the earth and light of the world.  Until we start being salty and shining light, darkness will continue to increase.  Selah.
